What is First Tech Challenge?

FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is part of the FIRST family of programs. FTC in Michigan is geared for middle school students who want to compete head to head using a sports model.FIRST Tech Challenge teams design and build a robot using a reusable kit of parts and compete within a common set of game rules to play an exciting field game and complete the specific season challenge.

It’s way more than building robot. Rebel Wreckers are challenged to design, build, program, and operate our robot to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. Guided by adult coaches and mentors, we develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles, while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and working as a team.

Our student-led team , Rebel Wreckers FTC 13643 continuously strives to strike a balance of having solid leadership and open communication. Using resources that we have access to such as the app Onshape learning center, we always see to it that we have productive collaboration in all that we do. With platforms such as Asana (utilized during the spring season), Click up, and the Slack app, we are able to achieve our goals of being organized, connected, and managing to use our time wisely. The build season is a short time period, and in order to be successful, we believe that there is no time to waste, and it is critical that we are able to be efficient as well as manage our time and resources well. We are a team that understands each other and works well together.  We value inclusivity as we recognize that each team member has different capabilities and therefore receives equal opportunities so we can help each other succeed. In our team, we don’t believe in having a “superstar” team member to help us excel, as we know it’s always a group effort that works best. Last spring, our team merged with another team, and since then, we have learned to work side-by-side to improve our robot and each other. Together we have helped each other learn new practical skills, such as learning to use sensors from Rev Robotics to make our robot more reliable and efficient, redesigning our arm for the spring tournament, etc. as well as becoming a stronger team through our developed collaboration skills.
